Pre-historic man and his fellow cavemen were very religious people, and they originally worshipped the sun before any other earlier "gods": I believe they eventually made an image of their "god" the sun and placed "him" high up on a primitive altar to worship: The image they created only resembled a circular disc because they of course did not know that their "god" actually existed in the form of a sphere.
